Watch: Sint Maarteners Come Together to Clean Up Philipsburg and Mullet Bay – #SXMUNITE

The only way that Sint Maarten will come back better than it was before Hurricane Irma is if the people of the island come together. Over the last two months, that’s exactly what has been happening. Neighbors have been spending time getting to know each other and supporting each other through the hard times.

Never was that more evident than this weekend, when nearly 500 people came together on Saturday to help clean up the boardwalk area in Philipsburg, and also around Mullet Bay. The Rotary Club of Sint Maarten organized the clean up event (read more here) that helped the community unite and continue the massive clean up effort.

In this video, several people talk about the event with highlights from the clean up excursion. Expect to hear more soon about other clean up events around the island.

I fell in love with the island of Saint Martin the first time I visited to celebrate my 40th birthday in May of 2009. Since then, I've spent most birthdays there, and have visited countless other times getting to know this wonderful place and the friendly locals that make it so special. I adore the culture, the people, the community, and the beauty of this stunning island. SXM Strong is a website that I started to support humanitarian relief efforts following Hurricane Irma. There was no plan, it just evolved as I witnessed the devastation that Irma caused the island and the huge need to communicate and disseminate information about what had happened and how people could help support this island and its people.
