This Simple Idea Has Big Potential For Saint Martin

Have you ever noticed that sometimes it’s the simplest ideas that can have such a big impact? I mean, look no further than the simple paper clip. How many times have you used one? I’d say close to a zillion, right?

In all seriousness though, simple ideas really can pave the way for big things.

If you haven’t seen what a relatively new organization — All About a Smile (SXM) — is doing on Saint Martin, then you may want to take notice. Led by Jeff Jhangiani and Jacky Rom, this organization is making a big impact on a daily basis. And they’re doing it by helping those on the island that are most in need.

Today they’ve announced the Buddy Project. It’s a relatively simple concept with the potential to unite the community even more than they already are.

If you live on Saint Martin, on either the French or Dutch side, you can sign up now. You’ll be paired with a family in need who you will sponsor. When you go to the grocery store to buy food, you’ll simply buy your sponsor family a few items from their list, deliver them their food, and you’re done.

The idea seems very simple, but the potential social impact could be huge. I just returned from the island and the biggest, most obvious thing I noticed while I was there was just how much the entire community has come together. Neighbors are supporting each other, local businesses are coming back to life, and, even though the island depends on tourism as it’s economic engine, it’s the locals who are helping to get each other through this time.

It’s really an amazing time to be in Saint Martin, and if you get the chance you should go soon. I promise you’ll be very glad you did.

I fell in love with the island of Saint Martin the first time I visited to celebrate my 40th birthday in May of 2009. Since then, I've spent most birthdays there, and have visited countless other times getting to know this wonderful place and the friendly locals that make it so special. I adore the culture, the people, the community, and the beauty of this stunning island. SXM Strong is a website that I started to support humanitarian relief efforts following Hurricane Irma. There was no plan, it just evolved as I witnessed the devastation that Irma caused the island and the huge need to communicate and disseminate information about what had happened and how people could help support this island and its people.
