Having seen the devastating impact of Hurricane Irma in 2017, I am always on alert during hurricane season. This season feels like it will be much more active and quite a bit more intense than recent hurricane seasons, so it’s important to stay vigilant.
A perfect example of the dangers of a tropical storm was seen today in Sint Maarten’s Great Bay off the town of Philipsburg. A large ship broke loose from its dock and got stranded on a sand bar in the bay. From what I can tell, at least three, maybe four crew were rescued from the ship.
Here is a post from Port Sint Maarten on Facebook:
“Port St. Maarten would like to thank our Maritime Department and Shipping & Maritime Department for their valiant efforts in rescuing crew members stranded during the Storm.
Thank you to Chief Pilot Johnson, Pilot J.Johnson, Pilot D. De Palm, pilot boat Captain R. Halley, Deckhand F. Castillo and Paul Ellinger! 👏🏽”
Great work by the crew of the rescue boat taking action that may have saved lives today!
