Before I started this blog I was pretty much your average tourist that loved Saint Martin. By that, I mean that nothing particularly stood out about my knowledge of the island. We had our favorite places to visit when we arrived, but we always branched out and took in some new adventures.
The one thing that was certain was the love we had for the island. And not just the island, the people especially. Always warm and inviting. We’d also been to Saint Martin many times and with the frequency of our returns came a decent geographical understanding of the island. Most of which came from having always rented a car in which to explore.
Ok, so maybe we weren’t completely average, but there’s no question that I’ve learned a tremendous amount over the last couple of months since starting SXM Strong. It’s been an honor and a pleasure to be able to write here and to have so many read and follow along. I really mean that.
Along the way, I’ve been humbled by the many people that have reached out to me, and I’ve been able to begin to develop relationships with some of those people, most whom I’ve never even met. That’s pretty cool. And, while I’ll admit it hasn’t always been easy, or pretty, it has been extremely rewarding.
A few of my new-found friends run an incredible organization called Rebuild SXM. Cyriel Pfennings-Richardson and John Sandiford founded Rebuild SXM as a way to support and raise money for Sint Maarten in the wake of Hurricane Irma (read more about them and Rebuild SXM here). And to say they’ve been doing an incredible job would be a vast understatement. To date, they’ve raised nearly $40,000 that will go directly into the local economy on the island.
And the best news is that they’re not even close to being done yet.
This coming St. Martin’s Day (November 11, 2017), in Amsterdam, there will be two big fundraising events. Both will benefit Rebuild SXM. There’s no question that these events are must-attend for anyone within reach of Amsterdam.
Please help rebuild SXM and give today. Click here to visit the SXM Strong donate page. Thank you!
