Below are the details from Spirit’s announcement.

To assist residents of the island of St. Maarten returning home following hurricane Irma, Spirit Airlines will operate a relief flight.

Spirit Airlines flight number NK 8080 will depart from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) at 8 a.m. on Thursday, September 28 arriving into St. Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) at 11 a.m. local time. Check-in will begin at 6 a.m. at the Spirit ticket counters inside terminal 4. Per the government of St. Maarten, only DUTCH citizens who live in St. Maarten or have a St. Maarten residency card will be allowed to board the flight. No exceptions can be made.

To ensure we provide the maximum ability for people to take luggage, we are limiting luggage to one checked bag and one carry on per person.

There is limited availability on this flight. To book yourself as a passenger, please call 1-888-778-2436. If you do not have a reservation confirmation number for the flight, please do not come to the airport.

To assist people trying to leave St. Maarten to return home, Spirit Airlines flight number NK 8081 will depart from St. Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) on Thursday, September 28 at 2:15 p.m. and arrive at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) at 7 p.m. Passengers should arrive at the airport by 11 a.m. for check-in. Only people who have the legal right to travel to the U.S. will be allowed to board the flight. Criteria for travel to the U.S. includes possession of:

  • Valid travel documents permitting travel to the U.S.
  • Sufficient funds for stay in the U.S.
  • A ticket to depart the U.S.

Anyone not meeting these requirements will not be able to travel. If a passenger arrives in the U.S. and is not admitted, they will need to purchase travel for a same-day departure to their home country. In the case of Dutch citizens residing in St. Maarten, that means a same-day departure to Holland or Aruba, since there are no scheduled flights to St. Maarten.

To ensure we provide the maximum ability for people to take luggage, we are limiting luggage to one checked bag and one carry on per person.

I fell in love with the island of Saint Martin the first time I visited to celebrate my 40th birthday in May of 2009. Since then, I've spent most birthdays there, and have visited countless other times getting to know this wonderful place and the friendly locals that make it so special. I adore the culture, the people, the community, and the beauty of this stunning island. SXM Strong is a website that I started to support humanitarian relief efforts following Hurricane Irma. There was no plan, it just evolved as I witnessed the devastation that Irma caused the island and the huge need to communicate and disseminate information about what had happened and how people could help support this island and its people.
